Children in a school environment which is hard in giving punishment tends to be lied to hide his behaviour than are children who are in a school environment that does not punish.
A study published in the journal Child Development also shows that children in an environment that often penalize, will lie with more convincing than there are in an environment that does not punish.
Professor Victoria Talwar from McGill University and Professor Kang Lee of the University of Toronto examined the deceptive behavior in two groups of children who live in the same environment.
One group is listed in a private school that uses traditional disciplinary model, where violations of authoritarian school ranging from pencils to disrupt forgot to bring the class will be punished severely by the way was hit with sticks, slapped his head and dicubit.
Whereas in other private schools, children are disciplined in a way separated by teman-temanya, scolded and taken to the headmaster's Office to a more serious offence.
Researchers then compared the behavior of the children at two schools. Children are treated individually and asked to play a game of guessing. Children are asked not to peek at toy when left alone in a room. Most children in the two schools could not resist the temptation and take a peek of toys.
When researchers asked if they peek, almost all of the school that gave the voyeur sentenced hard lie. At the school that does not punish hard, just over half the voyeur who berohong.
What's more, after the first lie, liar from the school of hard punishment with more able to maintain kebohongannya when answering the questions about the types of toys. They deliberately give an answer wrong or foolish to pretend to not say the name of the toy.
"Our findings show that the environment to not only nurture dishonesty but also improve the ability of children to hide kebohongannya," keta Prof. Talwar.
Even young Liars in school hard, 3-4 years old has the ability to lie like a child aged 6-7 years.
"These findings surprising. Existing studies have consistently found that children from the harsh environment tend to experience a delay in punishing the development mentality, "said Professor Lee was quoted as saying from Eurekalert.org.
"One of the possibilities is due to the harsh penalties to strengthen the motivation of a child to deal with it with a strategy that can help him survive in the environment. Lying seems to be very adaptive to this situation, "imbuh Prof Lee.
According to the researchers, this study can serve as a warning to parents who sometimes use the penalty harsh when knowing his son lied. Corporal punishment is not going to reduce the tendency of children to lie, but it increases the potential skills lie.
